I   AM   A   HAWK

Memories   of
Atomic   Energy   Minister

Victor   Nikitovich   MIKHAILOV

"I am one of the most peaceful men but I have to rank with the 'Hawks' till there is not the slightest threat to the security of the country".

Mysterious Professor "M" * - who is he ?
Important scientist, founder of a scientific school,
one of those who has created the USSR "nuclear shield",
crowned with the most prestigious titles and awards,
statesman, minister...

( * - 29 May 1997, Victor Nikitovich Mikhailov was conferred the rank of the academician of the Russian academy of sciences ).

On January 28th 1992, the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Atomic Energy was created, Professor "M" its First Minister.
Beneath the eminent career heading the Soviet and Russian nuclear testing team can be glimpsed the man himself. Precisionist and dedicated scientist, working for the best of reasons, he emerges as a man whose very essence reveals the open, generous and loving great heart of Mother Russia herself. All the more reason for us to listen as he eloquently gives voice to his fears regarding Russia's recent unilateral moves towards nuclear disarmament.

"The hawk is a bird know for its swift flight and graceful landings, its keen hearing and vision, its powerful beak and its paternal concern for its progeny". A hawk cannot change its nature and survive. Man and his environment are inextricably entwined, the natural world must be cherished. Mikhailov effortlessly encapsulates the almost paternalistic, embracing protectiveness all astronauts seem to feel when contemplating Earth as an entity.

"I am A Hawk" is a heartfelt, searing testimony to the deadly folly of the whole nuclear arms race.

Born in 1934, Mikhailov lost his soldier father in World War Two. Determined to make something of his life, he entered the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute, specializing in Theoretical Nuclear Physics. He rose to become an engineering professor, author of numerous scientific works and winner of Lenin and State prizes, an integral part of the Soviet and Russian nuclear testing programme.
